Skopje & Ohrid - North Macedonia

Skopje & Macedonia Guide

Coming to Skopje for the first time? Where to start, what flavors to taste, how is the transportation? Here is a clear, no-nonsense summary. Let me know your dates, and let's shape your route together.

Travel Formalities

Visa

Visa requirements vary depending on your citizenship. Many countries (EU, USA, etc.) are exempt for short stays (usually 90 days within 180 days). Please check the current regulations for your country before traveling.

Passport

A valid passport is required for entry. Make sure to check your passport's expiration date and have your travel plan (return date, accommodation, etc.) ready before your trip.

Accommodation Registration

If you are staying at a hotel, they usually handle the registration. For apartments/Airbnb, ensure that the host completes the local police registration for you.

Practical Information

Time Zone

Skopje is generally in the Central European Time zone: CET (UTC+1) in winter, CEST (UTC+2) in summer.

Climate & Clothing

  • Spring / Autumn: Most enjoyable time for walking tours; a light jacket + comfortable shoes are ideal.
  • Summer: It can get hot during the day; a hat, water, and sunscreen are recommended.
  • Winter: Expect cold and windy days; a thick coat, scarf, and hat are suggested.

Walking Note

Skopje flows beautifully when explored "on foot": The Old Bazaar, Stone Bridge, Fortress, and the Square feel like a single continuous route.

Money, Payment & Exchange

Currency

The official currency is the Macedonian Denar (MKD). While Euro is accepted in some tourist spots, MKD is much more convenient for daily expenses.

Cards & ATMs

Card usage is common in the city center; ATMs are plentiful. However, cash is always king in small shops and the Old Bazaar area.

How Much Cash?

It's good to have some small banknotes for the first day (coffee, snacks, small museum fees, etc.). You can continue with ATMs/Exchange offices afterwards.

Transportation

Airport → Center

From the airport to the center, you can usually take a taxi, shuttle bus, or arrange a private transfer. We can clarify the most practical option together based on your arrival time.

Within the City

Most places in the center are within walking distance. For short distances, taxis and apps are also available.

Short Routes Outside Skopje

  • Matka Canyon: Nature + boat ride + scenery (half day/1 day).
  • Ohrid: The lake, old town, sunset (full day or overnight).

Safety & Health

Emergency Numbers

  • 112 (General Emergency)
  • 192 (Police)
  • 193 (Fire)
  • 194 (Ambulance)

Health

Standard travel insurance is recommended. If you take regular medication, bringing spares and a copy of your prescription will make you feel more comfortable.

Customs, Etiquette & Tips

Photography

If you are going to take close-up photos of people, asking for permission is a polite gesture here, as it is everywhere.

Mosques / Churches

  • It is important to be quiet and respectful in places of worship.
  • In some places, covering your shoulders/knees might be required.

Selim’s Mini Tip

Don't rush in the Old Bazaar: small coffee breaks and getting lost in side streets are the true soul of Skopje.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated as a gesture of satisfaction. For free walking tours, the concept is "no upfront fee, tipping is voluntary": it depends entirely on your satisfaction.

Let's Plan Your Route

Write down your dates and how many days you have; let's finalize the Skopje + (optional) Matka/Ohrid plan.
